Web 2.0 in practice

This is a lesson I did with a Form Four Principles of Business class. It involved a lot of student involvement, however this lesson did not involve web 2.0 tools..... the lesson involving Web 2.0 is next....

Students are familiar with the terms ‘market’, market research, target group and consumers.
_________________________________________________________________________________Rationale:   To promote understanding of “theories, concepts and practices related to marketing focusing on its impact on firms and consumers.

1.      To provide knowledge and skills to function effectively as consumers within the local, regional and international environment.
2.      To develop an awareness of the impact of changing consumer behaviour on individual health and wellbeing.
   Objectives:_______________________________________________________________________________________          

At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
·         Define the concept of Consumer behaviour
·         Reproduce a simulation of purchasing for a family
·         Infer the factors affecting consumer behaviour
·         Compare and Contrast the changes in consumer behaviour within recent times
·         Describe the impact on of the changes in consumer behaviour on consumers health and well being

ü  Consumer behaviour refers to the way that different consumers behave when faced with purchasing decisions.
Firms must be aware of consumer behaviour so that they can better satisfy the needs of their target group as well as attract them to their goods and services.
Factors affecting Consumer behaviour:

ü  Quality
ü  Taste
ü  Tradition
ü  Income ( affordability)
ü  Spending patterns
ü  Brand loyalty

Group Activity – Divide students into four groups and give instructions for the simulated activity
Reproduce simulated purchasing of food items for a family and document the activities. Prepare for class presentation.
Simulated Grocery with blocks that depict certain food items for trading.
Monopoly money for purchasing
Chart to document purchasing
Instructional sheet on how the activity is to be conducted.

Guided Response – students are instructed to infer and defend the factors that affected their purchases.
Teacher records responses from each group on the board
Relate their experience and observations from the simulation.
Infer the factors affecting consumer behaviour.
Derive the changes in consumer behaviour in recent times and the consequences of such changes.


Closure and Evaluation:__________________________________________________________________________

   Teacher allows each group to choose a mystery product. In groups students are asked to explain through text, dramatization, song, drawing, how any one factor would affect their consumer behaviour when faced with purchasing the mystery product.
Groups present their responses
Teacher allows the other groups to give feedback and then gives final feedback
Students summarise what they learnt.

 This lesson below includes the use of web 2.0 tools. I do believe that it is a work in progress lesson, however with further research, I would be able to use more tools that are relevant and practical to the students. The aim in this lesson is to get the students totally involved in their learning.

 Each group would be given a mystery factor that affects Consumer behaviour. They are to find pictures (online) that pertain to the factor and create a photo story, using appropriate background music.
Groups then are to present their photostories. The other members of the class state which factor is being depicted in the photostory.

Home Assignment: 
Students are to make a comment on someone else’s blog post, Indicating if they had similar experiences with their simulated activity. They are also to state whether their thoughts on changes in consumer behaviour within recent times are similar or different to that of another student.
