Netiquette - creating responsible digital citizens in a digital society

When I think of ‘netiquette immediately I think of creating an atmosphere of digital citizenship. It is really important for our students to understand and appreciate proper manners on the internet. Every year when the form one students receive their laptops, we conduct a short session with both parents and students and one of the presentations is on netiquette (see PowerPoint presentation)

Some additional Points that I would share with my students are:

BE HUMAN…. • Do not be impersonal • Treat others with courtesy and respect as if they are physically in front of you • Golden Rule – treat others as you want to be treated.
BE ON POINT… • Do not babble, aim to stick to the point especially if it is an email being sent. Sometimes information is lost when someone has to read a lot to get the point of the matter THE CONTENTS • Check over grammar and spelling. • Be cautious, think and re read before submitting, remember what is posted or sent is public information • PLEASE DO NOT SHOUT (like I just did) when you are writing. Only use all capitals for emphasis.
